The never-ending expansion of urban spaces compels us to rethink the way we wish to experience our towns and cities. The world is now made up of layers of complex, superimposed infrastructures, whose daily operation is made possible only by the omnipresence of technology – which, while enormously useful to us, has nevertheless become an authoritarian component of our lives, forcing us to adapt to new spatial practices that lead us to feel more and more passive, and less and less like actors and stakeholders.More
Extending our approach taken to a large number of city projects, we consider that each urban situation provides an opportunity to explore a conceptual framework based on the way that people will inhabit the city of tomorrow. Our starting point is to examine current and potential future ways of living, working, travelling and consuming in the city. The aim, prior to any formalisation, is to create an environment that permits diversity and changing uses, and incorporate these into a geography and a history. The existence of any architectural or urban-planning project is entirely dependent on the quality of the partnership between client and creator, and the complicity between the two. Clients, as project initiators, play an essential role in terms of innovation: since it is they who formulate the initial request, it is also they who are in the best position to guide the architect toward new avenues of exploration and provide answers to the questions of our time. Questions linked purely to the energy consumption of buildings no longer interest me. They are now a routine part of technical design and are taken into consideration by industrial production and system manufacturers. The idea of truth is a question that has fascinated me for a long time, as I like to manipulate ideas before manipulating forms. The hypothesis of a constructive truth makes it possible to create a sort of continuous chain between initial data and a final result, rather like a mathematical proof. Conventional architectural production is bathed in an ideal light that reveals surfaces and volumes through the interplay of crisp shadows and sharply defined areas of brightness.
